The Issue

Hello families and friends of our great SAIC community!

We are calling on all of you for your help. A huge injustice has been done and we need to get your support. Let me give you a brief background.

For those of you who are parents of students, current students or alumni of St. Anthony-Immaculate Conception School (SAIC) in San Francisco, undoubtedly you have been either involved with or taught by Ms. Robin Rockey, 2nd Grade teacher, also known as the Halloween Queen. Well, SHE HAS BEEN FIRED!
Ms. Rockey was fired! The email sent to parents by Barbara Moodie implies that the decision was Ms. Rockey’s and that she quit or retired. Parents and students who contacted Ms. Rockey believed it was her choice. That is not the case. She was FIRED, and Ms. Moodie had the final say. Is this what we want for our children to learn? During a pandemic, firing one of the most loved teachers that had been there and very loyal to SAIC for over 23 years? What happened to SAIC’s School-wide Learning Expectations? Preachers of the Gospel? Caretakers of Creation? Seekers of Truth and People of Celebration?
Last year when Covid-19 hit the world, all schools went into Zoom teaching, Ms. Rockey included. Then summer break. When school started up again, so did Ms. Rockey. Then it was announced that in person classes were to begin again on October 19, 2020. Ms. Rockey being immunocompromised consulted her doctor who put her on a 3 month leave, in hopes that a vaccine would follow during that time. A vaccine did come but because of the tired levels on which people were eligible to receive it, it didn’t happen for teachers during that time frame. The Archdiocese said Ms. Rockey could have an UNPAID extension if Ms. Moodie agreed. Well last Monday, February 8, 2021, Human Resources contacted Ms. Rockey that she was no longer employed by the Archdiocese based on Ms. Moodie’s decision. Just short of three weeks away from getting the first dose of the vaccination, so Ms. Rockey could return to work. That’s right, teachers will be eligible in the next tier but it doesn’t matter for Ms. Rockey, while she will still get the vaccine, it won’t be to return to work because her livelihood has been ripped out from under her in the blink of an eye.

What we are hoping to do is to get a petition going to reinstate Ms. Rockey in her rightful place with her 2nd grade class at SAIC. (We would love to include on that petition Rockey in, Moodie out, but I don’t know if that would fly).
We are getting this petition together and would like to have each and every one of you please sign the petition. In order to be Covid-19 friendly, it is online and as easy as 1, 2, 3!  If you have my (Shirley Busch) phone number or my daughter Alma’s, please text us or send me a message on Facebook or email. You can reach us by whatever means you'd feel most comfortable but please spread the word and the link to share this.

Let's get Ms. Rockey back in her classroom!
