Stop gender discrimination and allow girls to play football

Stop gender discrimination and allow girls to play football
Why this petition matters

My 13-year-old daughter Caroline has been playing co-ed football since she was five years old -- and has excelled in doing so. Two years ago, Caroline launched a campaign on Change.org and nearly 110,000 supporters pushed the Archdiocese of Philadelphia to allow girls to play tackle football in her local Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) program. It was an incredible moment.
Recently, however, the Archdiocese of Philadelphia worked behind the scenes to reverse the decision. They made changes to their handbook to prevent girls participation in football and other contact sports after 2014. But as long as they receive federal funds to adhere to Title IX rules, they won’t be able to just rewrite a handbook to get away with gender discrimination. It is illegal to do so.
So our fight continues, and we need you to fight with us once again. We are urging the Archdiocese of Philadelphia to end this illegal practice and stand behind equality and fairness. Tell them to change the rule for good and allow girls to play!
Caroline has inspired other girls and gained the respect of her opponents, players and coaches alike. But this isn’t about Caroline. She is no longer eligible to play CYO football because of her age. This is about girls around the country who want to play -- and there are no shortage of those stories. Caroline wants to win this for them, so that girls today and tomorrow have the same opportunities that she did.
The Archdiocese of Philadelphia claims the rule was changed again to emphasize “dignity, integrity, fairness and moral strength” among students. That seems counterintuitive, doesn’t it? It’s time to end the Archdiocese’s archaic rule once and for all. Please join our continued fight for justice for all girls and sign our petition calling for a final rule change!
