Why this petition matters
Started by Katarina Holecek
Aramark is one of the largest food service providers in the world, and many of their clients are universities, including our school, UNC-Chapel Hill.
Though Aramark has promised to be transparent around the progress they're making with animal welfare issues, they have failed to keep these promises.
The vast majority of animals raised for Aramark's clients, like UNC-Chapel Hill, live a life of unimaginable misery:
- Chickens raised for meat are bred to grow at an alarming rate causing them to suffer from leg deformities, chemical burns from lying in their ammonia-laden waste, and even organ failure. At the slaughterhouse, they are violently shackled upside down, shocked in an electricity bath, have their throats cut, and are boiled to remove the feathers. Often chickens make it through the electricity bath and are conscious when their throats are cut. Many make it to the scalding bath still conscious, and are boiled alive.
- Mother pigs are kept in small metal cages known as "gestation crates" for their pregnancies. The crates are so small that they often cannot turn around for months at a time. As a result of this cruel confinement, these intelligent, sensitive animals live a life of extreme suffering due to their physical and mental distress.
These practices are unacceptable, and the students of UNC-Chapel Hill deserve better.
We are calling on Aramark to be transparent with the public about their plans to stop serving food produced by the means of extreme animal cruelty.
PLEASE join us in telling Aramark to do the right thing by signing and sharing this petition!!!
