The Issue

To the Honorable Members of the Arizona Department of Education,

On behalf of the Turkish-American community residing in Arizona, I respectfully submit this letter to request your kind consideration in recognizing April 23rd as Children's Day within the educational framework of the State of Arizona.

This important day, celebrated annually in the Republic of Turkey, was dedicated by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of the modern Turkish Republic, to children around the world. Since April 23, 1920, Turkish people have celebrated this day to honor the role of children in building a peaceful and prosperous future.

Recognizing this day in Arizona would offer students an opportunity to explore international values, enhance cross-cultural understanding, and strengthen the ideals of peace, unity, and friendship—particularly among children from diverse communities.

We respectfully propose that the Department consider launching a study or initiative to inform students about the cultural significance of April 23rd Children's Day. Such recognition would be deeply meaningful to the Turkish-American community and serve as a celebration of global goodwill.

Thank you very much for your time and thoughtful attention. We would be most grateful for your support in recognizing this day within Arizona's educational calendar.

Sincerely,
Sevda Özonur
