In January 2021 Ards and North Down Council unanimously approved a £50m planning application for the redevelopment of Queen's Parade in Bangor. This private investment will transform Bangor's seafront, whose residents have been waiting over 20 years for this site to be developed.

Planning applications in NI are controlled by the Stormont Department for Infrastructure DFI. As one of their units had a concern over a potential flooding risk, the Department had the option to tell Council to halt this approval until further notice. They did this in February 2021.

The Developers and Council have been working with the DFI for a year now to try to resolve this. The Minister responsible, Nichola Mallon, can 'call in' this application, return it to Council with conditions, or agree that Council can decide this application. But this should have been done in a matter of days, not a year. The delay is inexcusable.

This is a major but not a 'regionally significant development'. Ards and North Down Council Council should be the body to decide this application.

We are asking Minister Mallon to agree Ards and North Council can decide this application, to allow this crucial development- essential to Bangor's regeneration- to proceed before the opportunity is lost.
