We, the undersigned residents of Brunswick County, petition local leadership to formally approve and back the development of a comprehensive, multi-generational Youth and Community Center in Shallotte, NC. As our county experiences historic, record-breaking population growth, our public infrastructure for health, child care, and community engagement must grow with it. We demand a safe, centralized hub that serves families, youth, and seniors alike. 
 
 
 
Why Our Community Needs This Facility Now
 
1. Managing Unprecedented Population Growth
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Brunswick County is the fastest-growing county in North Carolina, posting an annual population growth rate of roughly 4.7%. Our population has skyrocketed from 108,070 in 2010 to an estimated 182,515 residents. Shallotte sits at the geographic and commercial heart of this expansion. Yet, our public infrastructure is lagging behind, leaving thousands of incoming families without localized resources. 
 
2. Combatting Heart Disease and Comorbidities
According to public health literature and the American Heart Association (AHA), physical inactivity heavily exacerbates chronic conditions such as cardiovascular disease, obesity, and diabetes. Providing a dedicated, accessible public facility for regular exercise directly lowers cardiovascular risk and all-cause medical admission rates. Studies tracking community-based fitness programs demonstrate that routine aerobic and resistance exercises significantly reduce body fat percentages and body mass index (BMI), effectively decreasing the severity of comorbidity rates in vulnerable or aging populations. 
 
3. Reconnecting Youth and Cultivating Social Skills
Our children need spaces to disconnect from screens and build real-world relationships. Data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health explicitly proves that co-participating in organized extracurricular activities directly promotes the formation of new friendships and strengthens peer networks. Furthermore, adjacent developmental studies show that children engaged in structured team environments report significantly higher levels of peer belonging, communication skills, and social-emotional security. 
 
4. Relief for Working Parents and Families on Waitlists
Local working parents face a severe shortage of affordable, reliable summer child care, leaving many stranded on exhausting facility waitlists. This community center will introduce dedicated summer day camps, giving waitlisted families a safe, structured environment where children can learn, play, and grow while parents remain confidently in the workforce.
