Approve and build the Sand Canyon–Ravenhill Trail Link

Approve and build the Sand Canyon–Ravenhill Trail Link
The Issue
PETITION: Immediate Funding for the Sand Canyon Trail "Ravenhill Link"
To: The Santa Clarita City Council and the Parks, Recreation, and Community Services Commission.
Subject: Emergency Gap Closure of the "Proposed" Sand Canyon Trail Extension.
1. The Broken Promise: A Master Plan Violation
The extension of the Sand Canyon Trail from its current terminus to the Ravenhill/Placerita junction is already a designated project in the Santa Clarita Trail Master Plan. While the City recently completed the Sand Canyon Pedestrian Bridges to the north, this critical southern segment remains "Proposed" but unbuilt. By leaving this gap open, the City is maintaining a substandard facility that fails to meet the safety and connectivity goals of its own Master Plan and the Sand Canyon Special Standards District (SCSSD).
2. Community Isolation: Loss of Historic Trail Access
Our community has reached a breaking point. Residents on Ravenhill Road and south of Placerita Canyon Road have recently lost all historic access to the Golden Valley Open Space and Sand Canyon Trail system due to the private purchase and fencing of a formerly vacant developer parcel.
The Impact: This private sale has severed our informal neighborhood connections, leaving Ravenhill and southern Sand Canyon residents as an "isolated island."
The Result: We now have zero safe, non-motorized routes to reach the City’s broader trail network. We are trapped unless we risk traveling on the narrow, unpaved shoulder of a high-speed roadway.
3. The Double-Intersection Hazard
Current conditions force equestrians, hikers, and families to navigate a "gauntlet" of two dangerous, high-volume intersections:
Sand Canyon at Placerita Canyon Road
Placerita Canyon Road at Ravenhill Road The unpaved shoulder at these locations is narrow and provides no physical buffer. Restricted sight-lines at the Ravenhill curve mean drivers cannot see pedestrians or horses until a collision is nearly unavoidable.
Our Request
We, the undersigned residents and trail users, demand that the City:
Activate the "Proposed" Link: Immediately move the Ravenhill extension from the "Proposed" list to the Active Construction phase of the FY 2026-27 Capital Improvement Program (CIP).
Restore Connectivity: Provide the only remaining safe legal access for the southern Sand Canyon community to the City’s trail system.
Standard Compliance: Install the rustic wood fencing and DG-stabilized path required by the SCSSD to separate residents from 55-MPH traffic.
Sign this petition to advocate for a safer, more connected Sand Canyon. Your signature makes a difference.
