The Issue

For over 40 years, I've called the streets around St Ann’s Lane, Argie Road, and Barnborough home. I’ve witnessed the gradual increase in traffic, particularly the intrusion of HGVs, each weighing up to 40 tonnes, thundering past our homes. This isn't just a theoretical inconvenience; these massive vehicles are a genuine threat to the safety and well-being of our community. As a vigilant resident, I've conducted numerous traffic surveys over the years, revealing the pressing need for immediate action. Yet, despite the evidence, we are constantly told to accept a theory that traffic will somehow diminish or disappear altogether. But theory hasn't stopped these vehicles, and theory certainly doesn't safeguard our children who walk, cycle or even play on these streets.

The Leeds City Council has the authority to approve a Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) that would legally ban HGVs from utilizing our residential streets as shortcut 'rat-runs'. This legal tool is at their disposal, but remains unutilized, leaving our community at risk. An official TRO would not only make our streets safer but also compel digital navigation services to redirect these large vehicles away from our neighborhood, to the major roads they were designed to navigate. This is a tangible solution that prioritizes the safety of our residents and the integrity of our community over theoretical assumptions.

The current situation is untenable. The constant presence of HGVs has led to increased congestion, pollution, and a pervasive sense of unease among residents. We shouldn't have to accept the status quo when actionable solutions are within reach. By implementing a TRO, Leeds City Council can show a commitment to the safety and needs of its citizens. The time for action is now before a preventable tragedy occurs.

We urge Leeds City Council to listen to the voices of those who live in this area and are directly affected daily. Approve the TRO to ban HGVs on St Ann’s Lane, Argie Road, and Barnborough. We need this change for the safety, health, and peace of mind of our community.

Please add your voice to this cause. Support our petition to insist on the necessary legal action that will create safer streets for everyone. Sign and make a difference today.
