Appose proposed zoning by-law No. 038-37; respecting apiary operations (beekeeping) by-law

Appose proposed zoning by-law No. 038-37; respecting apiary operations (beekeeping) by-law

The Issue

Proposed zoning by-law No. 038-37 is a threat to the livelihoods of beekeepers and the health of our environment. This by-law would severely restrict apiary operations, making it nearly impossible for beekeepers to maintain their hives and produce honey.

Beekeeping is an essential practice for maintaining healthy ecosystems and ensuring pollination of crops. Without bees, many plants would not be able to reproduce, leading to a devastating impact on our food supply.

Furthermore, honey production is an important industry that supports many small businesses and provides consumers with a natural sweetener alternative. Restricting apiary operations would harm these businesses and limit consumer choice.

The proposed by-law also contains arbitrary regulations that do not reflect best practices in beekeeping. For example, it requires hives to be located at least 3 meters from any property line or building, which is unnecessary for proper hive management.

We urge the city council to reconsider this by-law and work with local beekeepers to develop regulations that support sustainable apiary operations while protecting public safety. Let's ensure a healthy future for our environment and economy by opposing proposed zoning by-law No. 038-37 regarding apiary operations (beekeeping).
