Appoint a Truck Driver as the Head of the FMCSA

The Issue

As a former driver with over 20 years in the trucking industry, I am deeply concerned that the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) is not led by someone who truly understands our struggles. Everyday, we, the truck drivers, are out here putting our lives on the line to support our families, dealing with numerous regulations that impact our lives and work. Yet, these rules are often made by people who've never driven a mile in our shoes.

I strongly believe that the head of the FMCSA should have firsthand experience in the field. Not only will this bring a much-needed perspective to the position, but it would also ensure that the regulations passed are grounded in the reality of the road, rather than in abstract notions.

According to the American Trucking Associations (ATA), the trucking industry comprises over 7.9 million jobs (ATA, 2021). Yet, regulations have begun to significantly impact small trucking businesses, who cannot compete with larger carriers. This lack of understanding at a regulatory level is hurting an industry that is vital for our economy.

Therefore, I urge you to support this cause and call for a truck driver to be appointed as the head of the FMCSA. It essential that our industry is led by someone who understands the reality of our work, and has practical experience dealing with the diverse challenges we face. Sign this petition and stand in solidarity with truck drivers nationwide.
