BAN cyber bullying app 'Burnbook' from your app store
The Issue
Up to 7 in 10 young people experience cyber bullying at some point within their lives. As a result, we have found that 10% go on to make a failed suicide attempts, 30% have self harmed and 45% refuse to tell anybody through fear of things getting worse or through a lack of faith in support systems.
We know this through our continuous work with thousands of young people worldwide. Cyber bullying is one of the biggest threats that we currently have within society and together, we must unite and take a stand against anything that harms young people; stripping them of their self-esteem and feelings of worth.
It was to our horror that a unnamed young person emailed us today to speak of how a new anonymous cyber bullying app called 'Burnbook' had caused a significant amount of distress to her and her friendship group after anonymous rumours and abuse were posted about them in a public page dedicated to their individual school on the 'Burnbook' app.
Inspired by the 'Mean Girls' movie, the app actively encourages young people to post anonymised abuse about others in the public domain. The creator of the app, Jonathan Lucas, regularly takes to their official Twitter page to Tweet abuse to anybody in dispute of the app.
We are calling on greater regulation of apps that are designed to defame, harass or abuse minors and adults from Apple App Store and Google Play app store and would like as many people as possible to support the repulsion of this vulgar, tasteless and malicious website.
All data has been taken from Ditch the Label - one of the UK's largest anti-bullying charities. To help support our work, please text DITC12 £5 to 70070 to fund support for 1 young person.
If you have been affected by this app, please do not suffer in silence. Help is available at www.DitchtheLabel.org.
