Appeal the Verdict in Richard Risher v LAPD by the 9th Circuit Court
The Issue
My beloved brother, Richard Risher, just 18 years old, lost his life to the violence of the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) in 2016. A life full of potential, cut short before it could truly blossom. All available evidence strongly indicates that excessive force was utilised on that fateful day. Yet, the jury's verdict fell staggeringly short of justice.
A study conducted by Rutgers University found that black people are 3.5 times more likely than white people to be shot by police when they are not attacking or do not have a weapon (ScienceDaily, 2020). This, along with countless other instances of racially-driven police violence, underscores the widespread problem of excessive and lethal use of force.
It's not just about my family's pain, but about a system that continues to allow such tragedies unchecked. By appealing the verdict of this case, we can challenge this flawed system and draw attention to the urgent need for police reform nationwide.
We are seeking appeal in the 9th Circuit Court to revisit the resolution of Richard Risher v. LAPD. For the sake of a young life lost, for justice, and to make sure no more families have to suffer like we did, it is essential that this case is reexamined in light of the evidence, and the officers responsible are held to account.
For my brother, for justice, for change - please sign this petition.
