Appeal for Immediate Action Against Genocide in Gaza

The Issue

Esteemed Representatives of the United Nations,

We, the students of QU Health at Qatar University, are compelled to address a grave humanitarian crisis unfolding in Gaza. The situation has escalated beyond a mere conflict to what can be described as a genocide against the Palestinian people.

The World Health Organization's reports paint a dire picture, highlighting numerous attacks on healthcare facilities in Gaza. These assaults have resulted in the tragic loss of hundreds of lives, including those of healthcare workers dedicated to saving others. The systematic destruction of healthcare infrastructure has pushed the health system to the brink of collapse, violating not only the right to health but also international humanitarian laws that protect medical facilities and personnel in conflict zones.

In this context, we urge the United States government, as an influential ally of Israel, to use its position to advocate for an immediate cessation of these atrocities. The United States bears both a legal and moral duty to protect civilians, the wounded, and the sick from the devastating effects of these acts.

Echoing the UN Special Rapporteur on the right to health, we assert that hospitals and health infrastructure must be safeguarded at all costs. The continued violence and threat of further aggression constitute a severe public health emergency in Gaza.

Therefore, we implore the United Nations to:

Recognize the situation in Gaza as a genocide and act to immediately halt violations of international human rights and humanitarian law.
Secure a ceasefire agreement, overseen by an impartial, international entity.
Establish a protective international presence in the occupied Palestinian territory.
Facilitate critical financial and humanitarian aid, along with humanitarian corridors for safe passage in and out of Gaza following hostilities.
Address the issue of the United States government’s unconditional military support to Israel, which may be contributing to the perpetuation of these atrocities.
We trust that the United Nations will treat this matter with the utmost urgency and take decisive action to end the suffering of the Palestinian people and uphold human rights in the region.

Sincerely,

Students of QU Health Qatar University
