The Issue

This petition is deeply personal to me, as I believe in the inherent potential for change and redemption in every individual. Nicholas Godejohn, who is currently serving a life sentence, deserves an opportunity to have his sentence reduced.

Nicholas was convicted of first-degree murder and armed criminal action in 2016. While we do not condone his actions or dismiss the gravity of his crime, it's important to consider all aspects of this case. Nicholas has been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder and has an IQ that falls within the range of intellectual disability. His defense argued that he was manipulated into committing the crime due to these vulnerabilities.

The American Bar Association (ABA) guidelines recommend considering mitigating factors such as mental health issues when deciding on sentencing (source: ABA Guidelines). It's time our justice system truly reflects these recommendations by reviewing cases like Nicholas'.

We are calling on legal authorities to reconsider Nicholas' life sentence in light of these circumstances. We believe he deserves a chance at rehabilitation rather than spending the rest of his life behind bars without hope for redemption or change.

Please sign this petition if you agree that justice should be served with compassion and understanding towards those with mental health challenges.
