App State University: Your Art Students Deserve Better!
The Issue
The Department of Art at Appalachian State University has recently been transferred to East Hall, an old dorm building, as well as still having classes located on the first floor of Wey Hall (which is currently under construction). This construction interferes with class time (loud noises, construction workers interrupting class, etc). In an appreciated attempt to create a better learning environment for future students, this movement has left us without many of the resources that current emerging artists need to receive a proper arts education.
Some of the necessary resources that are no longer available to us include:
Accessible entry into and around the building
A past version of this petition stated that we do not have running and drinkable water, however, we have recently been told that the water we do have in Wey and East has been tested and technically is drinkable. Though it technically is drinkable, we have seen, on multiple occasions, brown water in Wey Hall.
A proper studio for documentation of projects and space for installation work
Larger classroom space for critiques, number of students, etc.
The Synergy Lab (ability to make photography/graphic design prints)
Proper ventilation
Storage space
A/C
We are asking for compensation for the tuition that we have already paid, and deduction of what we will pay while the displacement and construction continue. We have been forced to work with less resources than other departments at this institution, and have been uprooted and displaced, ultimately affecting our education. We are not receiving the resources we need to complete our studies in a proficient manner and yet we are paying full tuition.
All of the students and faculty are unhappy and frustrated with the lack of resources and safety that East Hall and Wey Hall provide. We, as a department, would feel valued if these changes were made and if reimbursement was given for the lack of resources available to us for our education.
