APONG (Assistance Program for Older Adults' Needs and Guidance)

The Issue

Filipinos generally have a strong sense of respect and regard for the elderly, rooted in their cultural values of "utang na loob" (debt of gratitude) and "paggalang" (respect). Within the family and community, elders are frequently seen as the source of wisdom, knowledge, and authority. Close-knit family relationships are a tradition in Filipino society, and the elderly tend to be highly respected and cared for within the family.

In the Philippines, homes for the aged, also known as elderly care facilities or nursing homes, are establishments that offer assistance and care to elderly people who may not have close relatives or who need specialized care that their families cannot offer. These facilities provide a range of services, including healthcare, interaction with others, aid in daily activities, and recreational programming, to cater to the requirements of the aging population. According to data from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (2019), out of about 33 elderly care homes, the government owns 4, and 29 are business social welfare agencies or registered non-governmental organizations, including home-care facilities run by churches.

Depression and loneliness among senior citizens living in assisted living facilities can be serious problems. Moving into a care home after living with family or in a familiar community can be emotionally taxing. Feelings of loneliness and isolation can be brought on by various situations, including being apart from loved ones, adjusting to a new place, and disrupting routines daily. Three factors are involved in this problem. First, Limited Social Interaction where seniors may miss the frequent social contacts they experienced while residing in their communities or with relatives. The social circle may be more limited in care facilities, and residents may find it difficult to form relationships with others because of their different beginnings or medical conditions. Second, a Lack of Personalized care as busy schedules or staff shortages can prevent senior citizens from receiving the individualized care and company they require, which might cause them to feel alone. Finally, the Adjustment Period as people need time to adapt to an unfamiliar environment. They may experience extreme loneliness and isolation during this time until they become used to and feel more at ease in their surroundings.

In light of this, we are compelled to create an advocacy dedicated to the mental well-being of the elderly, particularly those who find themselves distanced from their families and residing in elder care facilities. As adolescents, our goal is to alleviate their struggles with depression and loneliness, reassuring them that they remain valued members of society and hold a cherished place in all our hearts.

The purpose of our advocacy is to create a space where the elderly not only receive physical care but also experience genuine companionship and understanding. Through volunteering efforts in barangays or homes for the elderly, we aim to alleviate the burden of loneliness and depression that often accompanies extended separation from loved ones. We commit to engaging in activities that stimulate cognitive function, encourage social interaction, and uplift the spirits of the elderly residents.
