Stop Collegeboard from creating AP Precalculus

The Issue

Collegeboard's AP Program has just announ ed plans to move forward with the creation of an AP Precalculus program by 2023.

We oppose this decision for the following reasons:

1. It reduces teacher autonomy. What I loved about my highschool math classes was how my teachers could really be passionate about certain topics and teach what they like at the end of the year. That's what turns kids on to math, not rigid curriculums where we learn the same specific things every year in order to pass one test. And that precious teacher autonomy will go away under an AP Precalculus.

2. It costs money. At $95 per exam, this will just be an unnecessary cost for many highschool students. While some schools may pay for all or some of exam costs, many do not. And in our view, this cost is simply unnecessary and limiting.

3. It simply isn't necessary. While most colleges do offer precalculus for students that are behind, there's no reason to try and get college credit for that when you're already in highschool and not behind. There was absolutely no need for this - our current system has been sufficient for the past 80 years. And there's no incentive to take the AP test. Why would you take it when you can not take it and have the exact same outcome?

In our view, this is just yet another money grab by the collegeboard. Help us show our distaste to them by signing this petition.
