Gypsy Rose Blanchard was given a 10 years prison sentence after plotting and facilitated in the murder of her mother that abused her over her entire life through forcing unnecessary medical treatments and medications. As a victim of Factitious disorder/Munchhausen disorder by proxy, she was psychologically and physically tormented her entire life. In her eyes, the death of her mother was the only way to escape her situation and enter into a new reality. She even describes that jail is a much better environment than the one she used to live in.

While murder is unjustifiable, the fact that she was treated so poorly her entire life indicates to me, a fourth-year medical student about to go to psychiatry, that she acted out of self-defense to escape the abuse. Instead of having her in prison, I believe that she should be held in a specialized center for psychiatric care to help her overcome the trauma she endured throughout her entire life, rather than having her behind bars. I am hoping that with this petition, it can catch the eyes of lawmakers or even Joe Biden/people that can help her release her from prison.
