Anti-Black Racism On The Go

Anti-Black Racism On The Go
The Issue
Paragraph 1 – Who is impacted?
Black passengers who pay to ride public transit systems like GO Transit, a service owned and operated by Metrolinx, are directly impacted when anti-Black racism is allowed to go unchecked. In this case, a 19-year-old Black youth was subjected to a racial slur by a white GO bus driver in broad daylight, an act of blatant disrespect and dehumanization in front of witnesses. While some bystanders now question whether the slur was used because they did not personally hear it, we must acknowledge that GO Transit buses are equipped with audio-enabled surveillance cameras that could easily confirm the truth. Despite this, no effort has been made to hold the driver accountable. Black riders, workers, and community members are once again forced to watch a system they contribute to financially and professionally excuse the racist behaviour of an employee without consequence.
Paragraph 2 – What is at stake?
If this incident is dismissed or ignored, it sets a dangerous precedent that public institutions in Canada can tolerate anti-Black racism without accountability. It reinforces a culture where Black people are expected to endure racism quietly.
At the same time, large government-funded organizations like Metrolinx continue to operate without transparency or responsibility toward the very communities they claim to serve. Failing to address this publicly signals that a white transit employee can use racial slurs against a young Black passenger without disciplinary action, while Black people are expected to continue paying for and supporting these services. This is not only an issue of disrespect—it is a matter of safety, dignity, and human rights for every Black person who uses public transit in this country.
Paragraph 3 – Why is now the time to act?
Now is the time to act because silence only strengthens the roots of anti-Black racism in Canada, making it appear acceptable and normalized. While Canadian institutions pride themselves on diversity and inclusion, this incident reveals the alarming gap between public messaging and lived reality for Black people. This driver has not denied using the slur, and his silence in front of the onboard camera speaks volumes. Immediate public accountability is necessary to send a clear message that anti-Black racism will not be protected by institutional inaction. By signing this petition, you stand for justice, transparency, and the right of Black people to ride public transit without fear of racial abuse. We demand a full review of the footage, a public acknowledgment of the harm done, and the dismissal of this driver.
