A Clean, Healthy and Environmentally Safe Water System for Stockton, Now!

The Issue

In approximately 2013, the members of the Stockton City Council voted to approve a new water treatment plan for the Municipal Utilities Department of the City of Stockton. The new plan will treat water that's currently provided for north and south Stockton with a chemical called Chloramine. Although the chemical has been approved by the EPA in drinking water systems, there are conflicting studies and evidence from places like the World Health Organization and the Canadian government that suggest otherwise. Chloramine is a mixture of Chlorine and Ammonia, both of which react into a toxic gas. The gas isn't so much the concern, but what this chemical will do in the city's drinking water pipes is scary. Chloramine has been known to corrode lead and copper pipes, in fact it has been found where the chemical actually draws out the lead from the pipes into the water being carried through them. Stockton is home to many older homes, so it is to be assumed that a lot of those homes and portions of the MUD water system still have old lead pipes. We all saw what happened in Flint, Michigan. We saw the lead polluted water coming out of their faucets. Is it worth the risk here? Environmentally, chloramine has been found to kill aquatic life, and it just so happens to be very difficult to remove from water. With that being said, do we really need a chemical that is known to kill aquatic life ending up in our already vulnerable San Joaquin-Sacramento River Delta? Simple research points to several other more environmentally friendly alternatives that will not only a sure that we have clean drinking water but that the Delta will be unharmed. The health of our community and our Delta should not have a price tag. We demand that the city really look at its current plan, lay out the other alternatives, and go with a plan that ensures that there is healthy water not only for us but for the ecosystem around us.
