Another petition to save the planet...
The Issue
Since scientists announced the climate emergency, I have seen many similar petitions, all asking 'others' to do something. I have yet to see one that ask ourselves to commit to act.
Yes, governments need to do something at their level, but ultimately most of the pollutions are created for what we consume and by what we throw away.
The consumer economy we are living in has to keep driving people to consume more for it to stay afloat. Together with the throwaway culture, they are not just driving climate change, but also other pollutions that are endangering the eco-system, and thus our survival. And they are dwindling the planet's resources.
So here is my petition:
1. We as individuals to start consuming (and throw away) less, but willing to pay more for things that are produced cleanly and by renewable means. This will in turn encourage businesses to produce sustainable products, and create such jobs.
2. Governments in the world and the UN to work together to implement policies to help make the transition into a sustainable economy, e.g. introducing tax on non-sustainable products, framework for sustainability rating of products, funding of research on sustainable ways of producing what we need, education etc.
I have been carrying a handkerchief to reduce the use of tissues, hopefully have saved some trees which can deal with the CO2. My company has stopped offering paper cups and encourage us to bring a mug to buy tea and coffee. These are examples of things we can start doing, seemingly small but if everyone acts the impact could be huge.
It is not too late to act. If we start now it will buy us more time to do more.
If you want to join in, please sign this petition, and help to share it if you can. Thank you!!
(In case you don't believe in climate change, you don't have to look far for evidence: our neighbour planet Venus. Its atmosphere is mostly CO2. It's surface temperature is >460C, day or night, at the poles or equator. If anywhere is like hell, there it is.)
