Another Free Year of Dorming at Brookdale for Macaulay at Hunter Students

The Issue

To Macaulay Honors College Advisors and Administration,

Free dorming is a benefit that many Macaulay at Hunter students enjoy as they partake in their freshman and sophomore years of college. With a 30-minute subway ride from the main Hunter campus, a booming social cohort, and activities that encourage student morale, Brookdale is the ideal place for any college student to reside. Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic during the Fall 2020 and Spring 2021 semesters, my classmates and I were essentially stripped of an opportunity to confidently use the resources provided to us as Macaulay at Hunter students. COVID-19 stripped potential applicants from these privileges listed above and dorming at Brookdale posed a risk to the physical and mental health of those who chose to dorm. From isolation inside single resident dorm rooms with no visitations to all remote classes to no in-person student activities or non-regulated gatherings outside of rooms, Brookdale was no longer the same residence hall promised to Macaulay at Hunter students. We are imploring you to please consider giving all Macaulay at Hunter students who did not dorm at Brookdale during their freshman or sophomore years due to the COVID-19 pandemic a chance to receive free dorming for one more year (consecutive Fall and Spring) during their undergraduate studies at Hunter College. This would only be fair as students before us (and those to come) were offered the full two-year dorming experience that comes with being a student at Macaulay at Hunter. We understand that Macaulay and its respective leaders were not in control of the pandemic, but now you can control the restoration of experiences and opportunities that were taken away from us during the pandemic. We would like to hear from the Macaulay administration about what we can do together to ensure that the promises and resources offered to its students are upheld. We hope you consider this request and we anticipate hearing from you soon.

Sincerely,

K.W., on behalf of the students of Macaulay Honors College at Hunter College
