Making anime more accessible for blind and visually impaired
Making anime more accessible for blind and visually impaired
The Issue
In recent years, we have seen a major shift towards a digital future. More and more, services and products are becoming available online, and in parallel, we are recognizing the needs of people that we had previously ignored. There are approximately 39 million blind people in the world, and many of us have no way to enjoy this plethora of information and resources.
As blind anime fans, we are often restricted by the lack of accessibility. Many of us rely on audio description and screen readers to read subtitles. iOS devices have a feature called Media Descriptions which, if supported, makes the screen reader read the subtitles out loud. Unfortunately, some of the biggest names in the world of anime don't provide this. We would like to call on companies like Crunchyroll and Funimation to join forces and provide this essential accessibility support for their shows, including the dubbed ones. This way we, the blind fans of anime, can continue to support our beloved series and the creative efforts that go into making them.
