The issue

  • It is now against the law to sell glue traps in New Zealand, but cruel snap traps are legal.
  • Snap traps are still the most common way to trap mice. Utilizing a  spring attached to a thin crossbar and loaded with bait, when a mouse or rat takes a bite the bar suddenly snaps toward the body. The hope is that the 'snapper' crushes the skull or spine and produces instant death.
  • But this only happens some of the time.  Too often the nose, a leg, or a non-vital part of the body is caught instead, and the dying process can be prolonged, with the animal in extreme pain throughout.    Sometimes they bleed to death.
  • If the rodent happens to get away from a snap trap, it will probably still die an agonizing and prolonged death in the wild.
  • With what we now know about rodent sentience these cruel traps - first patented as long ago as 1879 - are completely inacceptable.  There are humane solutions available for the control of rodents.  Snap traps should be illegal to sell and buy in this country.
