Sterilization needs to be essential in Puerto Rico

The Issue

300,000+ stray dogs live on the streets of Puerto Rico hungry, neglected and suffering.  Cats and kittens roam for food then quickly hide from anything that comes near. This is life for the hundreds of thousands of animals in Puerto Rico.

Currently on lock down due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Puerto Rico has stopped nearly all services deemed “non-essential” including Vet clinics and medical services for animals (medication and emergency services are allowed).  For 37 days, rescuers and pet owners have not had access to spay and neuter procedures which leaves an open door for animals to reproduce by the hundreds.  Procedures that were performed on a daily basis to prevent the thousands of litters that may soon end up homeless.

We experienced it post Hurricane Irma, Hurricane Maria, the Earthquakes just a few months ago and now with Covid-19, animals end up suffering the consequences.

Overwhelmed rescue groups on the island are now faced with limited resources in a fight they have been battling for years, putting an end to the overpopulation of animals left to their own fate.

If Veterinarians are willing to offer no-contact appointments to continue the sterilization of animals and pet owners and rescuers are desperate to have the procedure done why is this much needed service not considered essential.

Please help us in asking the government of Puerto Rico to reconsider Veterinarian services as “essential” so that rescuers and pet owners can continue to their work in controlling the population of unwanted animals on the island.

Thank you
