Protection of Britain’s wildlife

Protection of Britain’s wildlife
The Issue
There is estimated to be just over 8.5 million different species on our planet, according to the Natural History Museu, some 70,000 have set up home or evolved in the U.K.
Since the introduction of the 1981 Wild Life and Counrtyside Act populations have plummeted, in most cases the specie in protested not the habitat. At present 7000 individual species are on the critical list. The taking of habitat protection out of the Act by the then Tory Government for Land Owners, Builders and Farmers, just before it went into Parliament, is the chief cause. They knowingly took the teeth out of the Act which has now become a massive waste of public money. In doing so, they have made Great Britain one of the most nature deprived countries in the World.
Ninety two percent of all the land in Great Britain has no wildlife protection. Of the remaining eight percent, which are known as Sites of Special Scientific Interrest (SSSI), 46% have not been surveyed in the past 6 years due to Government cut backs.
Land Owners, Builders, Farmers, Councils and Building Inspectors have used this opening in the Wildlife Act to their own ends knowing nothing could be done about it. The dash for ownership and misuse of Green Belt and Wildlife Habitat has recently begun again and has to be major concern to us all.
The only way to protect wildlife is the protect the habitat, if you destroy the habitat then you destroy the wildlife.
Humans are at the top of the tree and in being so, have a duty to ensure that all other species have the opportunity to Evolve and Survive.
