An Open Letter to AC/DC: Axl Rose should not be a guest singer

The Issue

Dear Angus and AC/DC,

First, we would like to thank you for putting out Rock or Bust and doing a tour to support it. We would like to thank you for continuing to have the energy of, well, an AC/DC song. We also recognize that you have been great to your fans for decades, and any decision you ultimately stick to is what we will have to support.

The purpose of this letter is to give you a sense of how we feel about the decision to remove Brian from the band and replace him with Axl Rose. Assuming those issues are independent of each other, we would like to address the latter simply because it has not been completely clear about what exactly is happening with Brian.

Axl Rose was a fantastic front-man, and Guns N Roses a great band, but he is not for AC/DC. I will list some of the top reasons that this would be a disappointment.

1.    Axl doesn't respect his fans like AC/DC does. If you have been to a Guns N' Roses show, you know how the lack of interest Axl has in being there affects the overall feel of the concert. AC/DC have always been a band who performs as if they are there for the fans, not the other way around. AC/DC tries hard to prove what they are worth each and every show, but Axl has exponentially stopped trying to prove himself once he already got worldwide recognition. When you go to a diner, you don't want the waitress to make you feel like you are a burden, and much more should be expected when you go to an AC/DC show.

2.   Axl is unpredictable. This ties along with number one. Axl is one of the few people that, despite however much he is getting paid, can’t act like an adult. Whether it’s being late to the shows, once allegedly for watching Ninja Turtles, or throwing a fit during the show, his arrogance should not be involved with AC/DC. If he flips out during a Guns N Roses show from people throwing things at him, just imagine how he will handle AC/DC fans, that don’t want him there, throwing harder, blunter objects at him. I’m not saying fans should throw things at Axl, I'm saying you can't deny the extreme inevitability, and consequences that follow. Think about it. You know the media loves to attack Axl whenever they can, and even the slightest temper tantrum will be a reflection of AC/DC. “Any publicity is good publicity” does not resonate with your fan base, but sure, you can draw a lot of attention to your tour at the cost of staining AC/DC’s reputation. The front-man to a band is usually the public face of the band and bears a lot of responsibility, even if it’s just for a few shows.

3.    Axl’s singing is not fit for AC/DC. Anyone who has heard his most recent performances can understand why he is going to make every AC/DC song feel like it’s missing an entire dimension. He can’t catch his breath. Perhaps it is due to his age, the amount of clothes he wears on stage, or his increased blood pressure, but he won’t be able to spurt out choppy lyrics for an entire AC/DC performance. Your songs are not cut out to let him hide himself in Cliff’s and Stevie’s backing vocals. Nor are they fit to dual sing with him on stage, and as for you, well you just better keep shredding the hell out of your guitar. Because he doesn’t have much breath, not only can he not hold notes long, but he can’t get his dynamics right. We all know how sad it is to see David Lee Roth trying to still keep up with Eddie Van Halen. It just doesn’t work. An AC/DC show cannot afford to have the front-man sound like the one with the lowest energy in the entire stadium. The beer won’t sell and the money won’t pour into your future tours like they used to. You can turn up the amplifier on his microphone until we can hear what he is thinking, but no amount of sound engineering can save it.

4.       AC/DC is not a band of social drama. Up until these last few weeks, there has not been much drama within the band, and that is one reason why AC/DC fans are the most loyal fans. When things got messy with Chris Slade in the 90s, it was not good for your image. AC/DC, much like the Grateful Dead, is supposed to be beyond all of that. When the band makes a statement saying that Brian’s hearing was the reason for getting a guest singer, then reports from Brian’s friend contradict that, it raises questions of the real motives behind this decision; are there financial motives, etc.. Axl is like a black hole that sucks everything around him into some sort of disagreement, so it will only add to the image of AC/DC becoming more like a social group than a band. Sooner or later, you will be begging Brian to join again. Learn from the past. In an attempt on trying to stay away from Brian’s status until more details emerge, that’s all for this reason.

 We don't want Axl/DC.

We hope this letter find you well and hope that it makes you revaluate your decision. Whether or not it affects your decision is up to you. You may know better than all of us, but do understand how we feel.

Sincerely,

.....
