PRESS RELEASE
Bus services on Anglesey are to be scaled back following a reduction in Welsh Government funding.
The Isle of Anglesey County Council is making every effort to maintain its rural transport network and keep disruption to a minimum by offering alternative routes.
As of 1st April, 2012, however, more than 30 current contracted bus services provided by County Council will come to an end. This follows a substantial reduction in the Welsh Government grant provided to all 22 local authorities for 2012/13 to support the operation of public transport.
Head of Highways Services, Dewi Williams, explained, “Whilst it is inevitable that there will be some inconvenience caused to the passengers who depend on these services, we’ve made every effort to minimise the impact of the changes and maintain connectivity for Anglesey communities, especially our rural areas.
“This has been done by withdrawing services where there are alternatives already available or those which are least used.”
He added, “As an Authority we had taken steps to protect our own bus services funding for 2012/13, with other areas of the Highways Service incurring a larger budget cut as a result.”
“This unexpected reduction to the grant, which was used to supplement the County Council’s own funding, has unfortunately left us with no option but to reduce the number of bus services we provide.”
The table below shows bus services which will end on March 31st 2012 and those alternatives which will be available from April 1st 2012.
