Demolition of 1-7 Waterfront Place, Port Melbourne derelict eyesore building Station Pier
The Issue
Let’s Bring back the WELCOME
For far too long the Port Melbourne community have had to suffer the eyesore at 1-7 Waterfront Place. No amount of work or goodwill from the long suffering traders, Station Pier operations, Council and the arriving tourists into Melbourne can cover up or pretty over this fact.
It has been a burnt out, rat infested, graffiti ridden derelict building following the fire in September 2014 in one of the busiest & key entrances and arrival points to Victoria.
Enough is enough … let‘s call on the owner to demolish this derelict site. It is not good enough that property owners can possibly think this is responsible behaviour or satisfactory ownership to leave a site in this condition.
The condition of this site has certainly contributed to the following:-
- Poor resident and visitor patronage to Waterfront Place businesses
- Dissatisfaction with the local amenity surrounding Station Pier and Beacon Cove
- Significant investment by Council in place making activities, art hoardings, …. Investment in Waterfront Welcomers
- Low satisfaction from Cruise ship passengers with the local Station Pier environment look and welcome
- Community pride has deteriorated
- Inhospitable environment
There has been a long and ongoing planning process for the development of the land. Regardless of the eventual outcome the owner and property developer should not be allowed to stick their fingers up at the community and hold them to ransom. It is not acceptable. Having Deep pockets doesn’t allow this behaviour to be acceptable.
The precinct has plans for redevelopment but needs State & Federal Government investment to return it to the incredibly poignant and proud place that has served as an arrival point to Melbourne. Unless the building is demolished there is no chance of ever bringing back “THE WELCOME“
Let’s bring back the WELCOME.
