The legalization of marijuana for recreational use is way overdue. There are so many benefits, the list would go on and on. The positive impact on the local economies is abundant. Just for example, in 2019, pioneer state Colorado collected more than $302 million in taxes and fees on medical and recreational marijuana. Sales in the state totaled over $1.7 billion. The number of jobs and investment opportunities it would bring to the state would be undeniable. When it comes to the safety and legal side of it, Marijuana is undeniably safer than alcohol. The CDC states that there are approximately 88,000 alcohol related deaths each year, and that’s not including automobile accidents. While the number of marijuana related deaths is practically zero? To give you an idea of how much THC it would take to overdose, a “lethal” dose is estimated between 15-75 grams. That means you would have to smoke between 238-1,113 joints in a day to achieve that.

If we’re selling and taxing alcohol, why not marijuana? There are responsible measures that can be put in place to keep those underage from having no more access to it as they would to alcohol. The discussion of benefits is endless, I hope for an open dialect about this subject very soon in the future. It’s 2020, and it’s time for Kentucky to get with the times and reap in the benefits that come from the legalization of this amazing plant.
