Chattanooga IDs for the Vulnerable

Chattanooga IDs for the Vulnerable

The Issue

Tennessee United introduces this petition on behalf of our cherished vulnerable communities in Chattanooga (our veterans, the formerly incarcerated, the elderly, the undocumented, youth in the foster system, the homeless, the mentally ill, and the disabled) to our city mayor, Mr. Andy Berke, Chattanooga City Council, and Representative Yusuf Hakeem. Not having a government ID has proven to put members of these communities at risk of being detained, incarcerated, and separated from their families for lack of proper identification. This lack of identification can also lead to the denial of basic services such as housing and installing utilities, as well as opening bank accounts, registering children for school, and presenting identity when interacting with law enforcement. In Chattanooga, the above mentioned groups can and have faced obstacles in obtaining the necessary documentation to prove their identity or residence. Having the option of a municipal ID would provide the needed documentation for proof of identity and residency that can help these communities acquire essential services. Cities such as Philadelphia, New York City, Topeka, Chicago, and Washington D.C. among others, are currently issuing city IDs to enable marginalized populations to access city services. Chattanooga prides itself in being a city of innovation. This is a powerful opportunity for Chattanooga to become one of the first cities in the South to help protect its most vulnerable. It is time for Chattanooga to have a city ID!
