Teachers want to be able to monitor the engagement of their students during online classes, but many students are uncomfortable with having other students watch them during the entire class. This is an equity issue for many students and their families. It is also an issue of privacy.

With the platforms for virtual learning that are available, a student can watch any other student in their class closely for the entire class if they share their screen with the teacher.  Anyone in the class can take a screenshot of a student and use it in any way they want to. It can be very distracting to see the faces of all of the students during class when the focus should be on the teacher unless the students are in small breakout groups.

We are asking you to adapt your platforms so that there is a way for teachers to be able to view students, but the students would be blocked from seeing each other in classes. Students are likely to be more comfortable sharing their screen with just their teacher, providing a better learning environment for both the student and teacher.

Schools that have been virtual since March will very likely continue to be virtual for at least the rest of the school year, and many schools that started the year in-person are moving to virtual with the rise of COVID-19 cases.  Please make this change as soon as possible!
