7 DEMANDS - Ensure civilian safety during encounters with law enforcement
The Issue
END THE THE ABUSE OF POWER!
"How many more must die before you hear us?"
Law enforcement agencies in this country LACK accountability. This must change immediately if we are to put an end to centuries of brutality and murder carried out by officers who intend to target vulnerable populations, especially people of color.
It is socially irresponsible and outright DANGEROUS to allow individuals to enroll into law enforcement, without a substantial screening process as well as appropriate responses to criminal activity within.
We demand the 7 policy changes listed below be instated immediately. Anything less than this will leave loopholes for criminals in uniform to continue to abuse and murder people.
1. Section (a) All active law enforcement agents and trainees are to be put under investigation to determine if they have affiliations with known racists organizations. Any affiliations, recorded incidents, or social media findings that indicate that the individual supports racial bias, gender discrimination, homophobia, xenophobia, domestic violence or human trafficking, etc., will automatically void their eligibility of holding any position in any law enforcement agencies for life.
Section (b) All living retired officers are to be put under investigation to determine possible connections with the affiliations stated in section (a). Any findings that indicate connection to activities and/or behaviors stated as such will result in void of pension and retirement benefits. Civilians and family members of victims are allowed to file grievances for past incidents involving injury and/or loss of life while in police custody. These claims will be reviewed by committees comprised of community members that include people of color, lgbtq, young adults, etc., to determine if charges should be filed.
2. Law enforcement agents must dispatch Emergency Medical Services before attempting to arrest unarmed civilians who are uncooperative. Any incident where use of force causes the death of an unarmed person will result in immediate termination of all officers who participated in the incident. All pensions, retirement and benefits are automatically voided.
3. All law enforcement agents are prohibited from engaging with civilians in response to incidents unless they have functioning bodycams to record the entire incident.
4. All incidents where civilians are injured, hospitalized or killed by law enforcement are to be investigated and reviewed by committees comprised of community members who are people of color, lgbtq, working class, young adults etc. Upon review, the committee will determine if charges should be filed against participating officers.
5. All civilians upon arrest must be allowed the option to report the precinct, names, and badge numbers of all officers involved in their arrest, to an attorney, family member, or representative, before they are taken into custody. Bodycam footage must record the civilian choosing to exercise or waive their right to report this information.
6. During traffic stops, officers are prohibited from requesting that a civilian exit the vehicle until they have given the civilian the option to report their name, badge number, precinct and location of traffic stop, to a family member, attorney or representative. Bodycam footage must record the civilian choosing to exercise or waive their right to report this information.
7. Any incident where officers attempt to stop unaggressive civilians from recording an incident will result in immediate termination. Any incidents where officers antagonize or use force on unaggressive civilians will result in immediate termination and void of benefits.
