Debra A. Haaland is an American attorney and politician serving as the 54th United States secretary of the interior. Born in Winslow, Arizona, Haaland is a member of the Laguna Pueblo tribe and made history as one of the first two Native American women to be elected to the U.S. Congress in 2018. Prior to her stint in national politics, she served as the chairwoman of the Democratic Party of New Mexico. Known for her steadfast advocacy of environmental and indigenous rights, Haaland's appointment as the head of the Department of the Interior marks a significant milestone for Native American representation in the U.S. government.
