Change the dress code policy

Change the dress code policy
The Issue
The dress code policy in the anchorage school disproportionately and arbitrarily targets impressionable female students. Female students wearing clothing deemed 'to revealing' and 'distracting' are called out and asked to change or not wear that again. This causes more of a distraction by calling them out of class and to the office and prevents them from getting the most from their education. These rules which are in place to limit distractions inevitably causes even more distraction and disruption The problem lies in a culture that sexualizes the bodies of young girls; a culture that does not properly teach young boys how to be respectful and self control. This also limits the students self expression. Subsequently, this perpetuates the rape culture of modern day society, which in return, tells young girls that they need to be ashamed of their bodies. This issue needs to be brought to the spotlight.
"As soon as I walked into school the new freshmen principal asked me to come into her office. She had me turn around to look at my shirt and asked if I had a jacket I could change into or if I could go home to change I said no. I asked what's wrong with my shirt she said too much of my back is showing and it's inappropriate, and draws too much attention to myself and isn't allowed. I said I've never heard of that rule before. She said well we do have a dress code I said I understand but I didn't realize that my back wasn't allowed to be seen and it's literally two inches. And she asked me to turn around again and then showed me with her hands how much was showing and just kept telling me it's not allowed and its inappropriate and she's just trying to enforce the new rules. She didn't make me go home but it pretty much ruined my morning because how she was telling me I'm drawing attention to myself. And I told her I'll take my hair out to cover it and she was like yeah that's not gonna work because girls keep trying to tell me that their hair covers it and that defeats the purpose."- Jaden Baca senior at Service
