Urgent need to improve the living conditions of dogs near Mumbai

The Issue

A visit to the villages in and around Alibag/the Raigad District reveal the pathetic condition of countless Indie dogs in the entire Konkan Region. These dogs are frighteningly thin and there are several signs of illness in most of them. Weak, neglected puppies roam close to highways and on the internal roads, at a high risk of being run over. Many of these dogs, group around local restaurants and street stalls, hoping for scraps. They are often beaten for bothering customers by their presence.

There is an urgent need to create basic First Aid and Feeding Centres throughout the area; these would be connected to strategically placed, well equipped HealthCare Centres that support capture, transportation, sterilisation/surgery, recovery and release. A reduction in population coupled with steady nutrition and recourse to quality care against illnesses, accidents, weather related issues, etc. can permanently end the miserable condition of these innocent creatures.

Initially, considerable investment would be required to set up all of this. But gradually, a kind of crowd co-funding method can be framed wherein holidaymakers, as well as the local residents, contribute sums of their choice as a sort of KarunaDaan [Compassion Offering]

To end with the following quote: ‘The greatness of a nation and it’s moral progress can be judged by the way in which it’s animals are treated’
