An Open Letter to the United Nations: A Global Referendum on Leadership Accountability

The Issue

Dear Members of the United Nations,

We, the undersigned global citizens, write to you at a time when the interconnected nature of our world demands collective responsibility and action. In an era where the decisions of one nation's leadership reverberate across the globe, we believe it is essential to reimagine accountability for those whose policies and rhetoric directly undermine democratic values, global stability, and human progress.

The United States’ recent history of leadership has raised profound concerns regarding the global consequences of domestic elections. U.S. President Donald J. Trump has repeatedly demonstrated a disregard for democratic principles, both within his nation and on the global stage. His influence has emboldened authoritarian movements, degraded international alliances, and fueled widespread misinformation—impacting not just the United States, but the shared future of all nations.

It is with this in mind that we propose a symbolic but critical initiative: a UN-sanctioned Global Referendum on the question of whether Donald J. Trump should be recognized as a leader worthy of global trust and respect. This vote would exclude U.S. citizens, who bear responsibility for their own electoral outcomes, and would instead allow the global community—the billions impacted by U.S. leadership, to have their voices heard.

Such a referendum would not seek to remove Trump from power directly, as this remains the purview of U.S. law. Instead, it would serve as a collective expression of the world’s stance on his suitability as a global leader, shining a light on the broader implications of his policies and rhetoric.

The benefits of this initiative are manifold:

Symbolic Accountability: By conducting a global vote, the United Nations would send a powerful message that leadership on the world stage comes with a responsibility to uphold democratic values and promote peace.
Public Awareness: The referendum would elevate global conversations about the impact of nationalism, authoritarianism, and disinformation, galvanizing efforts to protect democracy worldwide.
Restoring Trust: Such a vote would reaffirm the UN’s role as a champion of collective action, demonstrating its commitment to addressing threats that transcend borders.

This proposal is not about partisan politics or interference in sovereign affairs. Rather, it is an acknowledgment that the decisions of powerful nations have far-reaching consequences, and the global community deserves a platform to respond when those decisions jeopardize shared values.

We urge the United Nations to consider this bold step toward fostering global accountability. While symbolic in nature, a global referendum would carry the weight of billions of voices united in defense of democracy, stability, and progress.

The time has come to reimagine the role of global governance in an era where isolation is impossible, and the stakes are higher than ever.

Yours in solidarity,
Mr. S. Seymour, CD, CAF (Retired)
