An Act To Reduce Single-Use Plastics in Massachusetts!

The Issue

Everybody, everywhere is impacted by plastic pollution. You've probably seen hundreds- if not thousands of littered plastic bottles smashed on the side of the road, nip bottles littered, plastic bags floating in the wind, or bottle caps lying around. They're just everywhere. Recently, microplastics have even been found in our food, blood, and water becoming a serious health threat.

This needs to change.

This bill will create a much more environmentally friendly community for the state of Massachusetts. It will do many things including ban carryout bags and food ware made from non-recyclable or non-biodegradable material. There will be an Environmental Protection Trust Fund that will be spent on supplying low income populations with reusable bags, as well as improving other aspects of the environment. Retail establishments will not be able to sell alcoholic drinks in plastic containers that are less than or equal to 100 ml (this would eliminate nip bottles, one of the main sources of plastic pollution). With some exceptions, stores won’t be able to sell plastic bottles that contain 1 liter or less of regular water. It also limits the buying of plastic bottles with state funds. On top of this, the government will create a statewide composting plan that will be made accessible to the public. Our world is facing a climate crisis. Plastic use and pollution is part of the problem and this bill is part of the solution. We hope you will help us pass this bill to make Massachusetts a better place.

We need to act now, before it gets worse.
