Minneapolis Middle School students and parents for Sports in Middle Schools
25 Jul 2016
Inclusion is not happening with the change in putting Middle School sports only available in the attendance areas high schools. Students that have never played, do not have the means and support to get to later practices, do not have the courage to try a sport for the first time at the high school level of a school they are not familiar, do not have the transportation or ability to attend the high school in their area are out. Many, many minority and low income students are affected where the had the opportunity to play a sport and try something with out having parents commuting and having transporting them in the middle of the day they may not have the support at home and or means to get to the area high school. Minneapolis public schools promised a lot of things in their FAQ's related to this topic on their web site. They simply did not come true. They have seen a drop in the participation and satisfaction of athletics. The one thing many students have as a outlet and to keep them engaged in school. They have taken away and made a barrier for this outlet and therefore have seen a drop. Students that are specialized in one sport tend to play AAU. The FAQ's state that the MPS partnered with the Minneapolis park and recreation board on some of the sports. That was only Football and Soccer. If you can not get to the locations or do not want to get there you do not have an option. MPS Middle School students are being left out of something that could potentially be a gateway to college, a way to belong and be included as well as build pride and responsibility in their own Middle School therefore making it stronger. Not weakening it by creating a barrier and causing a lose of interest and inclusion in sports. Sports can be a terrific way for students to be disciplined, learn problem solving, community and engage in school. Please sign and have Middle School students sign. We want as many signatures as possible to talk to administration leaders about the failed change in athletics on the Middle School level. Sooner the better you do not have to comment just sign!
