Amy Coney Barrett should demonstrate her respect for the democratic process and decline the nomination to SCOTUS until after January 20, 2021.

The Republicans want to rush through a nomination and confirmation of a Supreme Court judge when an election is only a month away and where some ballots are already being cast. The Republicans are abusing their political power with this purely tactical action.

This is a direct contradiction to the rule the Republicans established in March 2016 when they said in an election year no judge should be appointed because the people deserved to have a voice in that selection.   Amy Coney Barrett is in a position to demonstrate respect for that precedent by declining the nomination until after the inauguration on Jan. 20, 2021.

She can show the Senate Republicans that she has the courage to make controversial decisions and she can reassure the Democrats that she can render unbiased decisions. A Supreme Court appointment will have a profound effect on the lives of all Americans and should not be rushed through to achieve a purely political end. In order to be truly representative, the makeup of the Court should reflect the American people in all its complexity. 

I urge Amy Coney Barrett to decline the nomination to the Supreme Court and by so doing bring dignity and honor back to the nomination process.
