Dan Ruether-Affor started this petition to Amtrak

Imagine taking a weekend trip to Spokane, Seattle, Fargo, or Minneapolis. Now imagine driving there in the middle of winter and you'd probably never want to drive again. However, if you took the train there, you might have a different opinion.
The north coast Hiawatha route would provide over half the state of Montana and others in North Dakota, Idaho, Washington, and other states with an alternate mode of transportation. In the status quo, the only train that services the state of Montana is the once-daily Empire Builder that runs along the Hi-Line, which seriously disservices the people of Montana (the same logic holds true for other areas that would benefit from a train, but since I'm from Montana I'm writing on what I know best).
Every year, a substantial number of single-rider car trips across the region could be reduced with this more southernly train. This would greatly reduce the ecological footprint of the region and put us on track to carbon-neutrality. Regardless of your political affiliation and/or beliefs regarding climate change, there are other advantages to a train that stem beyond the environment. Trains are a safer form of transportation than the automobile, especially in the northwestern region of the US where road conditions in the winter are less than ideal. Why risk flying off the interstate at 60+ mph when you can ride in (relative) luxury and arrive at your destination unscathed and far less stressed out by that [insert expletive here] driver who really should be in driver counseling right now. Finally, a train would bring revenue into smaller towns on the route that could use an economic boost right now.
So, what are you waiting for, do good for all of rural America and sign this petition!
