Susana Perez-Abreu started this petition to Amphitheater Governing Board and

Over the last few weeks, it has come to light that due to budget cuts, the French programs at Canyon del Oro High School and Amphitheater High School within the Amphitheater Public Schools District are at risk of being phased out for the 2020-2021 school year.

This proposal has come as a shock to the many students that benefit from and the teachers that bring forth this language learning opportunity. Both programs have been wildly successful, having consistent enrollment number throughout the years, including a steady increase in interest year after year. This, of course, is in great part to the wonderful teachers that have created a fun and engaging environment to drive student success and achievement.

The proposal from the District is to phase out the program at CDO entirely in the near future, but allow current students to finish. With this, it is intended that the teacher at CDO split her time at BOTH CDO and Amphi, thus eliminating the position held by the current French teacher at Amphi High School. A loss of a resident French teacher would be devastating to the students of the French program at Amphi High School. Not only would they be losing an incredible teacher with extensive knowledge in the content area, but opportunities such as participation in the Southern Arizona Language Fair and the French Club would likely disappear. Additionally, a reduction in class offerings would be made, thus leaving an entire group of students without the chance to take French in the future, putting the entire program at risk. It is evident that while this proposal may seem highly attractive from a financial perspective, the educational gain that would be lost is farther reaching and detrimental to our student body.

The proposal to phase out these programs not only takes away a wonderful opportunity from current and future students of French, but it creates unnecessary change that impacts teachers and students directly. These changes are being proposed without proper discussions involving all stakeholders or proper evaluation of the benefits and consequences of such large scale changes. It is imperative that the District allow teachers, students, and parents to voice their support and/or concern for a move that will impact them directly. By signing, you join myself and others in pleading to the District that they rethink this proposal and allow the many individuals involved voice their concerns about how this will impact them and perhaps the chance for an alternate solution that will not be as devastating as this one.
