Stop discriminating against New Orleans dog owners
The Issue
Americas Insurance is a New Orleans based company operating in the city of New Orleans and one of a small number of companies that will insure the historic homes for which the city is known. Yet they continue to discriminate against New Orleans citizens based solely on the breed of dog they choose to share their homes with. Between 50-70% of New Orleans dogs are thought to be pit bulls or pit bull mixes; Americas excludes any liability coverage for these dogs, along with Akitas, American Bulldogs, Chows, Doberman Pinchers, German Shepherds, Rottweilers, Wolves or "any dog known by breed to be vicious."
Americas current policies exclude coverage of any claims related to these breeds, yet the staff have also gone a step further and denied any coverage at all to owners of dogs in this group, or "a mixed breed which includes any of this group." By excluding these homeowners entirely, they seem to be making asssumptions not just about the dogs, but also about the kind of people who they think would own such dogs.
Dogs are not "known by breed to vicious" and the city of New Orleans recognizes this in their laws. The city code includes a legal definition of dangerous and vicious dogs that is based on the individual behavior of individual dogs. Breed is never mentioned. As a New Orleans business insuring New Orleans residents, we ask that the staff of Americas insurance familiarize themselves with the city's laws and create insurance policies that are fair and breed neutral.
