The acronym ADHD currently stands for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. As someone who lives with ADHD every day- I do not believe it correctly reflects the disorder. To remedy this issue ADHD should instead stand for Attention Dysregulation Hyperactivity Disorder.

First off, the term deficit in one's diagnosis can be harmful to their mental health and growth. It leaves a person feeling less than they are, which is not the case. Also, when a teacher or employer hears ADeficitHD it more often than not lowers their expectations of the student or employee, which can lower expectations of themselves.

Secondly, indeed, people with ADHD often have difficulty focusing- but they can also hyperfocus. Hyperfocusing happens when someone becomes so fixated on a something, everything else seems to melt away; this focus can often be sustained for long periods. But, there is a catch, the person with ADHD cannot control which focus state they have at any particular point in time.

Lastly, ADHD is a neurological disorder. The ADHD brain struggles to regulate the rate at which certain neurotransmitters fire, resulting in many well known symptoms. People with ADHD CANNOT help their symptoms, it is not a choice. However, what we do have a choice over, is how we define ADHD.

Please help by signing this petition so the name ADHD can more accurately reflect what it is to have ADHD!
