The Issue

#AMENDTHE13TH

The 13th amendment allows for PROFITABLE, LEGAL SLAVERY, it states:

“Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction. Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.

This loophole was utilized to reinstitute slavery by arresting former slaves for minor crimes in order to continue to exploit them for free labor, also known as convict leasing. By way of political and media criminalization of black and brown people, under the guise of a war on crime, this transformed into our modern, current system of MASS INCARCERATION.

AMENDING THE 13TH is a big first step to end the abuse of power by police and the cycle of disproportionately arresting black and brown people to fuel a system that profits from incarcerated bodies.

CHANGE THE AMENDMENT TO: Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.

TO MAKE THIS HAPPEN: Sign the petition! Call, mail, and email your state's general assembly, senators, representatives, and bill drafters and urge them to AMEND THE 13TH or else racial injustice and civil unrest will never end. Be polite and persistent. The more we contact them the more they will listen! Share this! Get friends, family, and anyone you know involved and keep sharing, together we can make this happen.

Let's end the cycle and dismantle institutional racism.
