Amend Zero-Tolerance Policies in Monroe County Schools

Amend Zero-Tolerance Policies in Monroe County Schools
The Issue
Last week, my son was physically attacked in his classroom by a peer who is known for bullying other students. Multiple classmates confirmed my son’s account of the incident. Despite this, he was issued in-school suspension for defending himself. To make matters worse, the assistant principal told my son to avoid the other child, adding that “now my son knows the other child has a short fuse.” That comment was both dismissive and troubling, as it placed the responsibility for managing the bully’s behavior on my son rather than addressing the root issue.
This incident is indicative of a larger problem within Monroe County schools, where zero-tolerance policies ironically fail to distinguish between aggressors and victims. Such policies mandate equal punishment for both parties involved in a physical confrontation, irrespective of the circumstances. By not allowing exceptions for self-defense, these policies unjustly penalize students who are trying to protect themselves from harm.
Children like my son should feel safe in their schools, free from fear of being punished for defending themselves against bullies. Schools should serve as safe havens where learning can thrive in a supportive environment. However, when students suffer punitive measures for simply defending themselves, it undermines their confidence and trust in the educational system.
The current zero-tolerance policies need urgent amendments to include exemptions for students who act in self-defense when faced with immediate danger. This would encourage a fairer approach to dealing with bullying incidents, ensuring victims are supported and not further victimized by the institutions meant to protect them.
We urge Monroe County School District to reassess and amend these policies, allowing for discretion in cases where students are defending themselves. By doing so, schools can better allocate resources towards preventive measures and counseling for bullying, rather than punishing those who seek to protect themselves.
Please sign this petition to call on Monroe County School District to implement much-needed changes to zero-tolerance policies, and help safeguard the rights and well-being of all students.
