Amend UK immigration law of 1971 on deportation
The Issue
My life changed dramatically the day I encountered an immigrant who was subsequently sentenced to a long 13-year prison term. I live in a community deeply affected by the actions of individuals such as the infamous leader of the Rochdale Grooming Gang, who has now been released back into the society that was once terrorized by his actions.
The grim reality of these individuals continuing to pose significant risks long after their crimes cannot be ignored. It is high time for us to alter the UK’s Immigration Act of 1971 concerning the deportation of foreign nationals who have committed egregious crimes.
Under the current law, there exists a formidable challenge in deporting those who threaten public safety. The statute contains loopholes that allow serious criminals to remain in the UK even after serving their sentences. This raises serious concerns about the safety and well-being of our communities.
To bring about tangible changes that directly enhance public safety, we call on lawmakers to urgently reform the 1971 Immigration Act. Proposed amendments should include the automatic deportation of non-citizen criminals who pose a severe threat to society, enhanced surveillance measures for those released, and a comprehensive review process that prioritizes the safety of citizens.
Statistics from various reports indicate that re-offending rates remain alarmingly high, and these figures starkly illustrate the necessity for legislative change. Furthermore, over the past decade, the UK has witnessed several notable cases where the failure to deport dangerous individuals resulted in repeat offenses.
