The Issue

I am writing this petition because my own experience with the current attendance policy has been incredibly challenging. Recently, I had to support my mom during a court appearance at a time when I was feeling unwell for several consecutive weeks. To make matters worse, I was unable to access the medical care I needed, leaving me in a difficult situation. Without a flexible attendance policy that accounts for genuine health issues, students like myself are left in a precarious position, forced to choose between our health and our education.

The primary call of this petition is to advocate for a change in the school attendance policy that allows students to miss 30 days or more, provided there is a valid medical excuse. This amendment would recognize the realities of students facing serious health challenges and ensure they are not unfairly penalized for circumstances beyond their control.

Currently, many schools have rigid attendance policies that often do not take into account the unique health challenges some students face. These policies can contribute to increased stress, anxiety, and even worsen existing health conditions. The added pressure to maintain perfect attendance despite legitimate medical issues can be detrimental to a student's overall well-being and academic performance.

There is precedent for such policy adjustments in various educational institutions across the country. Schools that have adjusted their attendance policies for medical reasons report improved student morale and equitable academic participation. In fact, research has shown that understanding and accommodating students' health needs leads to higher retention rates and better overall student health.

By updating the policy to allow absences for medical reasons, we can foster an environment where students feel valued and supported. This policy change would not just benefit current students; it would set a compassionate standard for future generations, demonstrating that we prioritize the health and well-being of our students.

I urge school administrators and policymakers to consider this proposal seriously. Let's work together to build a more inclusive and understanding school environment that respects every student's personal and health needs.

Please sign this petition to support a necessary change in the school attendance policy, so that no student is left to navigate the tough choice between health and education alone.
