Amend the RCMP oath to reflect Canadian values

Amend the RCMP oath to reflect Canadian values
The Issue
In Canada, every officer of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) takes an oath in which they swear allegiance to the reigning monarch - currently His Majesty the King. As a citizen who believes in the strength of our democracy, this practice is troubling to me. It lends too much symbolic power to an unelected head of state, something that appears incongruent with the principles of a modern and sovereign nation.
The RCMP, as Canada's national police service, is a symbol of Canadian values and should reflect the will and identity of the Canadian people. The current oath, by prioritizing allegiance to the monarchy, sends a message that may not resonate with an increasingly diverse and progressive society like ours. My personal concern is that this practice perpetuates a colonial legacy that does not accurately reflect the autonomy we strive for in contemporary Canada.
By amending the RCMP's oath to instead reflect fidelity to the Constitution and the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, we recognize the true source of our nation's strength—our laws, our rights, and our freedoms. This change would embody our dedication to democracy and commitment to justice, highlighting our national identity rather than colonial ties.
It is critical that our practices evolve alongside society. By redirecting the RCMP oath towards our Constitution and Charter of Rights and Freedoms, we ensure that our national institutions align with our societal values. This amendment would also reinforce the idea that officers are there to serve the citizens and uphold justice as defined by Canadian law, rather than pledging loyalty to a figurehead.
I urge fellow Canadians who believe in equality, progress, and national sovereignty to support this change for a more authentic representation of our nation's values. Sign this petition to call on the Canadian government to amend the RCMP oath to better reflect Canadian ideals. Your support can influence a vital change in maintaining our national character and promoting an inclusive society.
Sign the petition today to champion a modern, equitable, and truly Canadian RCMP oath.
