The Issue

Canada is a country of many firsts and enviable distinctions, but there exists one peculiarity that seems both illogical and costly: the taxpayer-funded residence reserved for the leader of the federal opposition party, Stornoway House. As proud Canadians, it is challenging to rationalize this expense when our Prime Minister's Residence, a symbol of national leadership, stands officially deemed uninhabitable as of 2026.

This is not merely about economic pragmatism; it’s about priorities and efficient use of resources. Currently, the Prime Minister is constrained to reside at Rideau Cottage, within the precincts of Rideau Hall, meant predominantly as the residence of the Governor General. While this may seem trivial to some, the optics of our national leader living in a secondary residence rather than the official abode signifies a misplacement of national heritage and practical utility.

Canada is the only nation within the G7 where a leader of the opposition enjoys a taxpayer-funded residence. This anomaly raises questions about fiscal responsibility, especially when those funds could be redirected to pressing needs like the restoration of historically significant sites, such as the Prime Minister’s Residence.

Amending the Official Residences Act R.S.C., 1985, is necessary to transfer the use of Stornoway House to the current and foreseeable home of the Prime Minister of Canada. By doing so, we can ensure that resources are strategically allocated to preserve our national heritage and provide the Prime Minister with a residence that reflects both the prestige and responsibility of the position.

Your voice can drive this change. Sign this petition to call on the Canadian government to reconsider the assignment of Stornoway House and prioritize the restoration and use of the Prime Minister’s official residence. Together, we can preserve the dignity and heritage of our nation's leadership.
